MACHU PICCHU MUDSLIDES STRAND 1900 TOURISTS

27 Jan 2010
Flooding and mudslides near Peru's historic ruins of Machu Picchu have stranded 1900 tourists, emergency services said.

An operation to airlift the foreigners out of the southeastern disaster zone hit was suspended because of heavy rain after just 75 were flown out by helicopter.
There are reports five people have died.

Peru's presidential chief of staff Javier Velasquez traveled to Cusco with emergency-level ministers and officials to evaluate the situation and coordinate rescues.

The country's civil defense service said it estimated the homes of 1300 people in poor rural areas - many of them riverside dwellings made of clay and straw - had been destroyed. Another 12,000 people were affected to a lesser degree, losing possessions or suffering property damage.
In Cusco, where a 60-day state of emergency has been declared, two bridges collapsed and 250 houses were destroyed.

Machu Picchu is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Latin America, attracting more than 400,000 visitors a year.
The 15th-century Inca ruins are located on a high mountain ridge 70 kilometres from Cusco. A railway that transports tourists to the site was covered by a mudslide

He added that movie director,Steven Spielberg, a creative consultant Universal Parks and Resorts, is expected to take part in the project. “He already has a number of ideas that I think will contribute to making it quite unique and, in the spirit of differentiation, something that caters to an international crowd,” Williams was quoted saying.

UNEXPECTED VISITOR AT TUBU HIDE - BOTSWANA

Sighting: Unexpected visitor at Tubu Hide
Location: Jao Concession, Okavango Delta
Date: 01 January 2010
Observer: Kambango Sinimbo
Photograph: Grant Atkinson

The Jao Concession's Hunda Island is a wild, remote corner of the Okavango Delta. While we are used to some incredible wildlife sightings, some are certainly more unexpected than others.
Tubu Tree Camp guide Kambango Sinimbo and his guests had planned to enjoy a typically peaceful late afternoon coupled with the mandatory glorious sunset with a sundowner stop at Tubu Hide. They were all in for a pleasant surprise however.

As Kambango pulled up to the hide showing his guests the famous bush loo with a view while checking the adjoining floodplains for wildlife he casually said, "Let's stretch our legs here and climb up into the hide with our sundowners." No sooner had he said this when one of his guests responded, "Is that a stuffed toy up there on the hide?" After some reversing of the Land Rover and excited yells of "Stop!" and cameras clicking, Kambango reversed a little more to reveal the 'gate crasher' in all his glory - a resplendent male leopard stretched out on Tubu Hide.

He was totally relaxed and had made himself completely at home. Kambango was so surprised that all he could do was laugh and savour this easy leopard sighting.

OASIS OF THE SEA

Oasis, which embarked on its maiden voyage on December 5 2009, is the biggest cruise ship ever built:
– So big that if stood on end it would be taller than either the highest skyscraper at Canary Wharf in London or the Chrysler Building in New York.
– So big that it can carry 6,296 passengers at a time.
– So big that it needs at least 312,000 passengers a year – It has to fill up every week because it only makes seven-night cruises.
– So big that British travel agents are worried they may not find enough aircraft seats between Britain and Florida to supply it. Four out of 10 British holidaymakers booking a West Indies cruise with the ship's owners, Royal Caribbean, are choosing to go on Oasis.
– And so big that $75 million has been spent on tripling the size of the Port Everglades terminal at Fort Lauderdale from where it sails, and new docks have been built around the Caribbean to berth it.

There are 21 pools on board including whirlpools, two of which stick out from the side of the ship like an epaulette high above the ocean. The AquaTheatre pool is almost 18ft deep. It's used for swimming and scuba diving lessons by day and for a water show at night – part Peterhof Palace in Russia, with fountains spurting 65ft in the air, and part Olympics, with synchronised diving and gymnasts bouncing off a trampoline.

The spa is the largest at sea, the fitness centre the biggest and the jogging track the longest. And for children, Oasis is a huge adventure playground where there's a children's theatre and science lab.
At night, as well as the jazz and the dancing, the karaoke and the guys doing stand-up in the comedy club, there is a Broadway musical in the Opal Theatre.

Size matters
Length: 360m (or just over 3.5 football pitches) - a "superjumbo" Airbus A380 is 73m long; the RMS Titanic was 269m long.
Height: 72m above the waterline - the same height as a 23-storey building
Displacement: 100,000 tonnes - equal to a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier
Speed: 22.6 knots
Cost: $1.4 billion

TRAVEL CHAOS RETURNS TO FREEZING EUROPE

The freezing weather sweeping across Europe has disrupted flights at airports in the UK, France, Ireland and the Netherlands.

According to a BBC report, flights were delayed or cancelled in Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam, as well as major UK airports.

A London-bound Eurostar train was stuck for about two hours in the Channel Tunnel on Thursday, while in Germany two trains have derailed in as many days, leading to delays and cancellations. Last month the Eurostar service was suspended for three days after several trains broke down in the tunnel. Powdery snow getting into the engines was identified as the cause.

In southern England, some 4,000 people were left without electricity after snow brought down power lines.

The cold snap is also affecting Scandinavian countries.
In Hemavan, in the far north of Sweden, a new winter low of -40.8C (-41.4F) was recorded overnight, Radio Sweden reports.
The Arctic freeze has also seen temperatures in central Sweden plummet to between -30 and -40C - the coldest weather since the mid-1980s.
In Norway, temperatures plummeted to -40C in some areas. The capital Oslo ran a reduced bus service because engine oil had frozen.

The new link will be about 1.5km long with a 343m tunnel section under the runway. The total cost will be approximately INR650 million (US$14 million), the report added.

NEW YORK BEATS ORLANDA FOR MOST POPULAR U.S. DESTINATION

While the once most-visited Orlando boasts year-round sunny skies, adventurous theme parks, and a multitude of family attractions, it’s New York that takes the cake in the most popular US destination.

More than 45 million tourists visited the Big Apple in 2009, and tourist officials predict even more of an upswing – precisely 3.2 percent more – in the following year, according to USA Today.

There are plenty of reasons that tourists travel to New York all year round. In the winter, Rockefeller Center illuminates with an enormously lit Christmas tree and an inviting skating rink for the public. Shoppers come in droves to explore New York’s unparalleled retail displays, and glamorous hotels put on holiday promotions to help visitors ring in the New Year in Times Square.

Spring and fall bring breezy, cool weather, and distinct fashion shows from top-notch international designers. Summertime brings celebrities and socialites to the Hamptons, but gourmet restaurants, world-class museums, and diverse nightlife keep you going in this spinning metropolis no matter what season.

Bold art and Broadway shows make this city’s edge come alive with color and music. Explore the gritty and stylish streets of Greenwich Village, and revel in academia of schools like NYU and Columbia.

WORLD THAI MARTIAL ARTS FESTIVAL - THAILAND

CELEBRATION NAIKHANOM TOM DAY ASSOCIATION INSTITUTE OF THAI MARTIAL ARTS & WORLD MUAYTHAI FEDERATION
Wai-Kru Ceremony Muay Boran & Krabi – Krabong SeminarNai Khanomtom Pro/Championships Belt
Date: 10 - 17 March 2010
Venue: City of Ayutthaya Stadium, Ayutthaya, Thailand

In Muay Thai, the boxer will always preface the fight with Wai Kru and this tradition is still practised nowadays. This ceremony is usually performed to rousing Thai music from pipes and drums, and with the initial Ram Muay (the boxing movement). The Wai Kru & Ram Muay are useful, since the Boxer gains encouragement from paying homage to his Teachers and feels that he is not on his own: he has his Teacher & the other Teachers of the Muay Thai discipline to support him.

The Wai Kru process will also give him time to concentrate & revise what he has learned, as well as display the nature of his weapons and the high degree of his skill. The steps, movements & use of his weapons are designed to warm up the body’s muscles, survey the field of play & conceal the contestant’s style of fighting. When the traditional Sarama music sounds around the ring it is recognised by all who are present as a symbol of deference & respect. Prior to the fight, the music helps to urge the fighter on, and rouses his spirit until he is ready to face his opponent in the boxing ring in manly combat.

BURJ KHALIFA TOWER OPENS - DUBAI

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Dubai has opened the world's tallest skyscraper, hoping to shift international attention away from the Gulf emirate's deep financial crisis and rekindle the optimism that once fueled its turbocharged growth.

Thousands of residents and tourists have crowded around the tapering half-mile high tower, which stands at least 160 stories high. The 828-meter-tall Burj Khalifa tower, named after the president of the UAE and ruler of emirate of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan, opened on 04 Jan 2010.

Dubai's hereditary ruler unveiled a plaque at the tower's base, kicking off inaugural festivities that included traditional Gulf Arab dance performances and skydivers landing parachutes emblazoned with the colors of the United Arab Emirates flag near the tower's base.
The developer of the newly opened tower said it cost about $1.5 billion to build the tapering metal-and-glass spire billed as a "vertical city" of luxury apartments and offices. It boasts four swimming pools, a private library and a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani.

The Burj's developers say they are confident in the safety of the tower, which is more than twice the height of New York's Empire State Building's roof. Greg Sang, Emaar's director of projects, said the Burj has "refuge floors" at 25 to 30 story intervals that are more fire resistant and have separate air supplies in case of emergency. And its reinforced concrete structure, he said, makes it stronger than steel-frame skyscrapers.

AMAZING XMAS DRIVE AT PAFURI

Sighting: Big Game for Christmas at Pafuri
Location: Pafuri Camp, Makuleke Concession, Kruger National Park
Date: 25 December 2009
Observer: Enos Mngomezulu

On Christmas Day this year, I took the Meyer family on an afternoon game drive. Within our first kilometre we were enjoying a sighting of an adult male lion close to the banks of the Luvuvhu River. He had just caught a young baboon - in fact, one of the guides had found him by responding to the frenzy of loud baboon and nyala barks, as these animals reacted in alarm to the sudden killing of one of their own.

We enjoyed the sighting and then left the large male lying in the shade with his prize, expecting to see him reunite with his pride after dark. As we moved along the northern banks of the Luvuvhu we saw a couple of elephant bulls and then two consecutive breeding herds, all of which had been attracted to the waters of the river because of the heat of this day. This is pretty standard at Pafuri where elephant viewing during the dryer months of the year is very good. We were very surprised as we watched the second breeding herd however to notice no fewer than six white rhino grazing nearby. The rhino were in two groups of three and we gazed our fill before moving off for well-earned sundowners on what had been a hot but thrilling afternoon.

Nature wasn't done with us yet though. About two hundred metres from the rhino and elephant sighting, we spotted a female leopard about 20 metres from the road. While we viewed the leopard, an elephant bull in musth started approaching the vehicle. At the same time the leopard started moving along the road, and I reversed along the road keeping an eye on both animals. Over the next 15 minutes the elephant moved in between us and the leopard, sometimes obscuring our view, as he contemplated our vehicle. Eventually as we reversed to follow the leopard which was moving away from us, the elephant bull decided to pass and left us with our leopard. The leopard crossed the road behind us and started stalking some impala, at some stage being lost to our view in the undergrowth, allowing us to leave the sighting and stretch our legs with a cold drink.

After sundowners we headed back to camp, it was now getting dark and we sighted one buffalo bull along the road to add to our mammal tally for the afternoon that had also included kudu, impala, vervet monkey, bushbuck, waterbuck and warthog.

That was my Christmas present!

BALI'S LIFEGUARDS

Bali's team of lifeguards are credited with saving 348 people from drowning in 2009, while, during the same period, they have reduced the number of actual drowning deaths on Bali's southern beaches.
Bali answer to "Baywatch" works from 16 life-saving posts spread across the Badung regency, including stands at Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Kuta, Legian and Canggu. During the current peak holiday period of Christmas and New Years, the Bali lifeguards are on full alert to safeguard beach visitors flocking to Bali's most popular swimming beaches.
The 16 lifeguard posts are manned on two shifts from 7:00 am - 2:00 pm and 12:00 noon until 7:00 pm. This scheduling provides for overlap between noon and 2:00 pm when Bali's beaches are busiest.
